Legislators to Hold Yet Another Oversight Hearing on DPH

On Tuesday, March 24, state lawmakers will be grilling Department of Public Health officials once again on their failures to investigate nursing home complaints and to keep nursing home residents safe from harm. The hearing will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the State Capitol and is being conducted jointly by the Assembly Committee on Health and the Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care.

Such oversight hearings have become almost an annual ritual for the Department of Public Health due to its abysmal performance in monitoring nursing homes. Pat McGinnis, CANHR’s Executive Director, is an invited witness at the hearing and will be calling for new leadership at DPH to transform its Licensing and Certification Division into a consumer protection division that will serve the interests of California nursing home residents.

The public is welcome to attend the hearing and there will be an opportunity for public testimony near the end of the hearing.
