CMS Reflects on National Initiative

On January 31, 2013, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), hosted a 90-minute presentation and question and answer session about its National Initiative to Improve Dementia Care and Reduce the Misuse of Antipsychotic Drugs in Nursing Homes.  You can see the presentation by clicking the following link:

The Initiative is currently focused on educating nursing home workers and state surveyors on dementia care principles focused on individualized attention for each resident and away from relying on antipsychotic drugs as a “treatment” for dementia.  CANHR hopes that these efforts result in better care throughout the country and swift enforcement action for providers who inappropriately chemically restrain their residents.
