American Geriatrics Society Warns Against Misuse of Drugs

Of the five concerns listed on the American Geriatric Society’s new guide to patients, “Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question,” two are warnings against the misuse of psychotropic drugs for elderly people. ┬áThe first warning is “don’t use antipsychotics as [the] first choice to treat behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.” ┬áThe second warning is “don’t use benzodiazapenes or other sedative-hypnotics in older adults as [the] first choice for insomnia, agitation, or delirium.”

We applaud the AGS for such plain-spoken warnings to patients about the potential for psychotropic drug misuse.
