State and Feds Issue Joint Statement to Stop Drug Misuse

In a rare joint statement of the California Department of Public Health (DPH) and the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), nursing homes have been warned once more that misuse of antipsychotic drugs is being targeted for eradication. The statement explains that CMS is using an antipsychotic use rate over 20% as a factor in selecting nursing homes for special monitoring surveys and that DPH is intensifying its focus as well.

California’s antipsychotic use rate in nursing homes stands at about 21%, down from 25% when CMS announced a campaign to end antipsychotic misuse in nursing homes in March of 2012.
