Center for Medicare Advocacy Calls Overuse of Antipsychotics “Elder Abuse”

The Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA) has issued an excellent alert decrying and analyzing the continued overuse of antipsychotics in nursing homes.  As of 2016, over 270,000 nursing home residents are still being drugged with antipsychotics, despite over ten years of black box labels warning of increased mortality and four years of a national campaign to end misuse.  CMA states this level of overuse is tantamount to elder abuse and a national scandal.  The alert cites chronic understaffing at nursing homes and weak federal and state regulatory enforcement as the primary causes of antipsychotic overuse on residents with dementia.
