CONFERENCE SCHEDULE


COURSE DESCRIPTION

Conference participants will be able to choose from over fifteen different sessions on a variety of elder law issues, including the latest information on conservatorship laws in California, new developments in Medi-Cal and the implementation of the DRA, the use and misuse of drugs in nursing homes, options for in-home care, the VA Aid and Attendance program and protections against elder financial abuse scams, among other sessions. Highlights include:

Common Ground: CANHR's 12th Annual Conference will include several plenary sessions on the common concerns of elder law advocates, estate planning attorneys and litigators, including elder financial abuse, mandatory arbitration issues and settlement agreements.

Update on Medi-Cal and the DRA in California: A special review of the statutory language that will implement the DRA in California, with a focus on transfer of assets, home equity, treatment of annuities and the hardship criteria.

Elder Abuse Issues and Litigation: Various panel discussions on new approaches to elder abuse litigation, including elder financial abuse litigation strategies, and the expansion of abuse cases to other community-based settings, such as RCFEs, CCRCs and hospice.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

These sessions are designed for legal services staff, private bar elder law and elder abuse litigation attorneys, and others interested in long-term care and advocacy. Most of the sessions assume basic knowledge of either Medi-Cal or elder abuse laws. CANHR will also offer Fall 2008 training intensives on Medi-Cal changes.

TIME

Registration is from 7:30–8:30am on Day 1 and Day 2, with a continental breakfast available both days. Lunch will be served and catered on the premises each day, with a box lunch and refreshments during the Round Tables on Day 2. A "Meet the Speakers" reception with a no-host bar will be held on Friday, May 9, from 5:00-7:00pm.

BOX LUNCH ROUND TABLES

Specially designated Round Table discussion groups on Day 2 will enable participants to ask questions of experts on a variety of elder law topics, including irrevocable grantor trusts, special needs trusts, reverse mortgages, care contracts and elder abuse litigation.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

MCLE Credits:California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform is a State Bar of California approved MCLE provider. CANHR certifies that these activities have been approved for MCLE credit by the State Bar of California in the amount of 6.5 hours per day, of which 1 hour on Day One will apply to legal ethics.

Legal Specialization: A number of the estate planning sessions qualify for Legal Specialization credits in the field of Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. A listing of approved sessions will be available.

TUITION

Registration is $675 for both days; $360 for one day only. Fees include conference materials, continental breakfast and lunch for both days and a reception on Friday, May 9, 2008. A confirmation letter will be mailed to you once you have registered.

For IOLTA-funded legal services program staff (also includes Title III and AoA funded programs): $80/day and $150 for both days. A discount of 25% is available for groups of two or more from a qualified legal services program. Call Robert Martien at the CANHR office for information.

DEADLINE

Registration and fees received by Friday, May 2, 2008 will qualify for mail-back registration confirmation.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

Cancellations received in writing in the CANHR office by May 2 , 2008 will be refunded subject to a $50.00 handling fee. Cancellations received after May 2, 2008 are not refundable. No refunds will be given to those who register but who do not attend the conference.

FACULTY

Faculty members are all recognized experts in the areas of Estate Planning for Long Term Care, Elder Abuse Litigation, Health Care and Long Term Care. A full list of faculty will be provided with the conference materials.

FOR YOUR COMFORT

CANHR suggests you bring a sweater due to fluctuations in room temperature. Water service is provided at each table. You will be asked to turn off cell phones and pagers during the sessions. CANHR prohibits the use of tape recorders without prior approval.

Shuttle service is available to the hotel from both San Francisco and San Jose airports, offering 11 scheduled trips daily to and from the hotel. DIRECTIONS

From San Francisco/San Jose:

  • Take 101 South to the city of Prunedale.
  • Stay in right hand lane and look for the sign for Monterey Peninsula.
  • Exit on Highway 156 to 'Monterey Peninsula'. Hwy. 156 will become Highway 1 South.
  • Exit at Pacific Grove / Del Monte Ave.. Continue straight on Del Monte Avenue. Be in the left lane at the sixth stoplight (road will split - do not enter the tunnel). Once through stop light, hotel will be ahead, one block on right side.

From Los Angeles/Southern California:

  • Take 101 North.
  • Take the 'Monterey Peninsula' exit which will bring you to HWY 68.
  • Turn left on HWY 68.
  • Exit on HWY 1 South.
  • Stay in right hand and lane and take first Monterey exit.
  • Turn right at the first stop light (Camino Aguajito Ave) and continue until road ends.
  • Turn Left on Del Monte Avenue. Continue on Del Monte and continue straight for three stoplights. Be in the left lane at the third stoplight (road will split - do not enter the tunnel). Once through stop light, hotel will be ahead, one block on right side.
